Push notifications aren't showing up

Use this guide if you aren't receiving push notifications.

Use this guide if you've turned on Push notifications in Second Door but nothing appears on your screen when a notification arrives.

Push notifications have to be allowed in three places:

  • Second Door — Settings > Notifications, where you check Push on the notifications you want.
  • Your browser — the site settings for Second Door, reached from the icon just left of the web address.
  • Your computer — the notification settings in macOS or Windows, which control whether your browser can show you anything at all.

Check them in that order. Second Door can tell you when your browser is blocking notifications. It cannot see your computer's settings, so that one comes last.

Start in Second Door

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications in Second Door.
  2. Confirm Push is checked on the notification you're expecting.
  3. Click Save at the bottom of the screen. Settings don't save on their own, so a change you made earlier may not have stuck.
  4. Send yourself a test message and watch for the notification.

If you closed the browser prompt without allowing it, push stays off. Second Door shows a warning when this happens. Check Push again to bring the prompt back, then click Allow.

If you're missing notifications for one conversation

Conversations Assigned to Me and New Messages in My Conversations only cover conversations that are assigned to you. Being assigned the lead does not make you the owner of the conversation on that lead, so check the conversation itself:

  1. Go to Inbox > Conversations and open the conversation.
  2. Find the owner control at the top of the conversation, left of Mark Resolved.
  3. Assign the conversation to yourself.

To hear about conversations you don't own, turn on All New Conversations instead. It notifies you whenever a conversation starts, whoever it's assigned to.

If you're still not seeing the notification, check your browser

Your browser decides whether Second Door is allowed to show you anything. If it's blocking Second Door, Second Door tells you as soon as you check Push. This fix happens in your browser, not in Second Door:

  1. Click the icon just to the left of the web address.
  2. Set notifications for Second Door to Allow.
  3. Reload the page. Chrome needs a reload every time you change this setting.
  4. Go back to Settings > Notifications in Second Door, check Push again, then click Save.

The exact wording differs between Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. In every browser, this control sits in the site settings next to the web address.

If you're still not seeing it on a Mac, check your Mac's settings

Your Mac has its own notification settings, and they control whether Chrome can show you anything at all. These steps happen on your Mac, not in Chrome and not in Second Door.

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac and click Notifications.
  2. Scroll down to the list of applications and click Google Chrome.
  3. Turn on Allow notifications.
  4. Choose the alert style. One style clears on its own. The other stays on screen until you dismiss it.
  5. Send yourself a test message and watch for the notification.

Look for more than one Google Chrome in that list. Some Macs show Chrome twice. Turning notifications on for one entry does nothing if your browser is running as the other, so turn notifications on for both.

Your Mac can hide notifications while you share your screen. In System Settings > Notifications on your Mac, the setting for showing notifications while mirroring or sharing the display controls this. If it's off, nothing appears during a screen share or a video call, even when Second Door and Chrome are both set correctly.

If you're still not seeing it on a PC, check your Windows settings

Windows has its own notification settings, and they control whether Chrome can show you anything at all. These steps happen on your PC, not in Chrome and not in Second Door.

  1. Open Settings on your PC and click System, then Notifications.
  2. Turn on Notifications at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to the list of apps and find Google Chrome. Turn it on.
  4. Click Google Chrome to open its own settings, and turn on Show notification banners.
  5. Send yourself a test message and watch for the notification.

Do not disturb hides every notification while it's on. It sits on the same Notifications screen. Turn it off, or add Chrome to the apps allowed to come through while it's on.

Windows can turn do not disturb on by itself while you share your screen. On that same Notifications screen, look at the settings for turning do not disturb on automatically. One of them covers duplicating your display. If it's on, nothing appears during a screen share or a presentation, even when Second Door and Chrome are both set correctly.

If Second Door asks you to allow notifications when you log in

If your browser permission is missing or has been reset, Second Door shows an Allow push notifications prompt when you log in.

  1. Click Allow notifications in the Second Door prompt.
  2. Click Allow in the browser prompt that opens.

The notifications you already set to Push start arriving again. You don't need to check them a second time.

What it looks like when it's working

A push notification appears like any other notification on your computer: in the top-right corner of your screen on a Mac, in the bottom right on a PC. It does not appear inside the Second Door page.

The bell icon in Second Door is separate. Your unread count and your Notification Center update whether or not push is working. If the count goes up but you get no pop-up, push is still blocked somewhere.
